Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were arch enemies, they were closest of friends working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN.
Was it good?
I have to say that at first I was not keen on seeing the film. I was expecting just another X-Men episode and to be honest I was not a massive fan of the last couple of titles.
However I’m certainly glad I watched it in the end, because it far outshone the main-stream titles in the series and was entertaining from beginning to the end.
For me the action was better, the acting was better and the storyline was better! The film certainly had a cool persona about it, that’s for sure.
The opening of the film starts in one of the scenes you may have seen from the original X-Men film. It’s the scene where you see Erik’s parents being ripped from his grasp and taken into a Nazi concentration camp. He then uses his – as yet unknown – powers to rip apart the metal gates.
After this emotional opening you then see a lone figure (Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw) standing in a neighbouring window observing the young Erick and who is keen to exploit his powers for his own good. But the story takes a dramatic twist later, but I won’t mention it here otherwise it will spoil the surprises that the film offers.
Bit by bit the other characters of the film are introduced, some will be recognisable by name alone, such as Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy), the older Erik (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence III), but there are also some new characters in the mix, plus a few funny cameo rolls thrown in.
It’s the above characters, and the way you discover their pasts, that to me makes the film great. I loved the way the characters were portrayed and how they struggled to come to terms with their powers and the way they would be portrayed to the humans around them.
This and the quality storyline, (plus the action) made the film what it is and it had a lovely flow to proceedings which kept you immersed from beginning to the end.
