Description
The Genius KB 600 Desktop kit provides both a Wireless Keyboard and Mouse combo. Only the wireless receiver is plugged into your PC via USB.
The Genius Kit provides everything you need straight out of the box, the package comprises of a Qwerty keyboard in a a black finish, an Optical mouse also in a black finish, a USB receiver, a keyboard wrist rest and two sets of batteries for each device.
The keyboard uses two AAA batteries, whilst the mouse uses 2 x AA batteries. Battery life depends on the quality of batteries but we would recommend using some rechargeable ones to keep the long term costs down.
As with most wireless combos we have used in the past the Genius kit does not differ with regards to the problems with paring the mouse and keyboard up with the receiver. It takes a few goes at pressing the connect button on each device before you can finally start to use your new toy and each time Windows XP booted up we had to press the left or right mouse button to wake the mouse up before we could use it - stops the batteries from being wasted.
Also the receivers position needs to be set properly otherwise your mouse movements will start to stutter.
Once the devices were paired however, Windows XP picks up and installs the correct drivers for you, but you can download Genius's iocentre from their website, which allows you to tailor the keyboards 12 hotkeys.
The hotkeys allow you to control your Master volume, launch webpages, favourite applications or play Music via Media Player. Changing the preset hotkeys was simple and we found the keys useful for general windows tasks.
The optical mouse looks a bit plasticy, plus the battery lid did not fit flush and it feels a tad back heavy due to the batteries, but it does fit nice in the Palm of your hand.
But both the Keyboard and mouse feel a tad heavy in use, with regards to heavy we mean the actual key presses and clicks, but considering the products costs only £15 you do feel like you are getting a sturdy and well built product for the price.
In fact the Keyboard defo looks the part and credit must go to Genius for releasing a cost effective product which does the job pretty well.
Like we said general Windows use was fine and playing games such as Battlefield 2 or Quake 4 was ok, though its mouse precision was not as good as it could have been.
