Digital Pen and Paper helps improve elderly care PDF Print

Digital Pen and Paper helps improve elderly careTwo Yorkshire councils are using Anoto’s Digital Pen and Paper (DPP) to improve their procedures for assessing older people's care needs under the UK government’s Single Assessment Process (SAP).

The SAP was introduced in 2002 to ensure that care requirements are captured thoroughly and accurately, but without processes being duplicated by different agencies.

The SAP structure has been in place within North Yorkshire County and Selby District Councils since 2003.

An initial trial was conducted earlier this year to enable handwritten text in assessment forms to be transmitted reliably from paper to digital media. Anoto’s partner Ubisys was then chosen to lead the implementation process - and as a local business - to address and resolve the issues raised during the pilot.

The time and cost savings to the Councils and its community services staff achieved in this trial resulted in 150 pens now being rolled out to North Yorkshire Adult and Community services staff, the housing support agency and the local NHS Primary Care Trust.

Council workers use two nationally accredited assessment forms to gather information on health and welfare from each individual. Once complete, the information on the form is transferred securely into a shared database via a mobile phone, passing through Ubisys software on its way.

The information is then immediately available to other agencies, carers and family members.

The Nokia E50 mobile handsets are provided by Orange for North Yorkshire Adult Services and by T Mobile for Selby District Council staff.
