SOCIAL networking site, MySpace this week launches a brand new channel dedicated to charities and social causes.
Called MySpace Impact, users can now directly connect with the issues and causes they support and make a difference in the world around them, whether that’s by starting their own campaign, volunteering their time, spreading positive word of mouth or even raising money for their chosen cause through their personal profile.
In turn, charities can set up and customise their own profile page with news, videos, fundraising tools and other campaign resources such as call-to-action alerts for volunteers. Users will also be able to download a widget to their page linking to Justgiving, allowing them to collect money for their chosen cause.
The launch happens at a great time for charities as they kick off their christmas campaigns. Since the channel went live on Monday (26.11.2007), MySpace Impact has already made 8,500 friends, with hundreds of messages of support being left by users. Unicef, RED, Friends of the Earth, Amnesty and Shelter are among hundreds of charities that have signed up to MySpace Impact channel.
Four themes will be explored during the launch month, with Featured Campaigns sitting at the heart of the MySpace community:
1. The Environment. Featured charities include www.myspace.com/friends_of_the_earth and Together www.myspace.com/togetherUK
2. HIV/Aids Awareness, featuring UNICEF www.myspace.com/unicefyouthvoice and World AIDS Day (1st December) www.myspace.com/worldaidsday
3. Human Rights featuring Amnesty International and activities around World Human Rights Day (10th December) www.myspace.com/amnesty_uk
4. Festive Friending – a week of Christmas focussed activities including Oxfam Unwrapped www.myspace.com/oxfamgb and Shelter www.myspace.com/shelterspace
The UK Impact Channel joins channels in the US, Australia and Canada. From young people in Canada skateboarding for cancer (www.myspace.com/skate4cancer) to every US Presidential candidate (www.myspace.com/impact), thousands of individuals, charities, issue-based groups and politicians are already using MySpace Impact to campaign, build awareness or raise funds. In the UK, Project RED is the country’s most popular MySpace profile with over 590,000 friends (www.myspace.com/joinred).
The channel will be expanded into the UK political arena in 2008.
