Description
The Motoroa Z3 certainly looks stylish, even the outer packaging has had some thought put into it ,with the box sliding open just like you do to get access to the phones keypad.
The mains and USB cables are also embroidered with the Motorola Logo. But of course the style of the phone will wear off pretty quickly if the innards are not up to scratch so lets have a gander.
At 115g the phone is not a bad weight, it feels pretty sturdy with useful buttons to the side which activate various shorcuts functions such as accessing your camera. The Top part of the phone houses the joypad and some extra shortcut keys which are a touch RSI inducing to press.
The phone takes a while to get booted up and initially the performance when accessing software and menus is a bit sluggish until the phone settles down.
The menus look vibrant and easy to navigate but feel a touch basic for our liking; especially as the phone comes with various business functions we would have thought the style of the menus could have looked more professional.
The 240 x 320 pixel screen displays images crisply and even videos play at reasonable quality. Its sound coming through its internal speaker was not so impressive, but luckily the supplied propriety headphones made things sound fine when listening to MP3's etc. It’s just a pity that you can't use your own headphones, however as it support the A2DP profile you could add some Bluetooth headphones as a bonus.
Application support comes with the usual contacts, notes, calendar support, games, two music players, image viewer and video player which were all pretty basic. But its 20mb of memory will force you to get hold of an external microSD card - which it can handle 2GB.
Its PC suite software was not too bad, with it allowing you to link up your phone as a USB modem, Sync contacts via Outlook or Outlook express, plus send multimedia files to the phone. You also get useful text message backup software which can store your text message to a remote server or a program backup your entire phone. Your expansion card will also appear as a drive letter in "My Computer".
The Exchange Syncfunction allows you to sync the phone up to a Microsoft Exchange account, which is rather useful for corporate workers. As the phone is Quad-Band you should get plenty of coverage if you go outside the UK but it does lack 3G support.
The main problem we faced when paring with our Orange Sim is that certain websites just would not display at all with browser errors popping up - something that was not a problem for the LG Shine we reviewed earlier.
Battery performance was ok and you should get a fair few days of use out of it without needing to reach for your charger.
The devices camera was 2.0megapiexles and came with some useful features, including a flash or should we say a beam of light. We have attached a basic image taken with the camera below. Sound quality for voice calls was ok and you do have the added option of turning on the speaker phone if you want others to listen in to your calls
