Description
You can now buy the Fujitsu C550 for under the £300 mark which is pretty good, especially as it features a hi-res 640 x 480 screen and hi-spec components.
For those looking for a phone or GPS option you will need to look else where, as the C550 is a traditional PDA. However it does come with an impressive list of features including a superb hi-res display that looks great when viewing videos, creating documents/presentations and playing basic games.
From a design point of view the Fujitsu is cool with a nice gun metal finish that feels comfortable in the palm of your hand (thanks to its 160g weight). It has neat little touches such as the blue illuminated buttons and raised keypad that makes it in theory useful for games players.
Continuing its feature list you get Bluetooth 1.2 and Wifi 802.11g support for connecting up to wireless routers but we recommend you stay clear of the supplied E2C software and use the built in Windows Mobile utility for connection - as we found the E2C utility did not work properly.
The CPU used in the Fujitsu is an intel PXA270 520Mhz and as you can see from the benchmark results using spb's software it scores pretty high (see image gallery below). However its graphics performance was not so hot mainly because the CPU has to cope with a hi-res display, but if you are not interested in playing games this should not be a concern as general use was fine.
It did not stop us from playing games mind, even the latest COD2 game for the PPC ran ok - albeit in software mode (though there was signs of lag).
Battery performance was reasonable, but we recks you should be able to watch a full movie before the battery runs out, however with its hi-res display its going to drain much faster than most PDA's.
You get approx 76mb of free internal memory to play around with, but we recommend getting hold of an optional SD card as soon as possible.
The C550 comes with a variety of useful applications and utilities, for example Pocket Office for viewing and editing Microsoft documents, zip software for compressing and uncompressing files, a dictaphone option for voice recording and the E2C utility.
The box also comes with a protective case, 2 stylus pens - which are handy if you accidentally loose one and a nice USB cradle.
