Description
The HP 2490 may be getting on a bit now (was released latter part of 05) but as its price has dropped to sub £300 its one of the best traditional PDA's you can buy.

Granted the HP lacks a GPS and phone option but this model is a prime example of how a traditional PDA still has a place in an over crowded smartphone market.

Underneath the bonnet you get a fast intel 520mhz processor and strong graphic performance - which was pretty quick at handling anything we could throw at it.

Its screen display was pretty good for a 320 x 240 pixel display and is definitely sharper than most PDA's we have used.

Memory wise you get an impressive 126mb of internal memory free to add extra content such as mp3 files, documents, that sort of thing. Interestingly memory expansion can accommodate both SD and Compact FlashII cards, which makes it ideal for those who want to tap into the higher storage capacity that Compact Flash cards provide.

Connectivity is handled by Bluetooth 1.2 and Wifi 802.11b (no g support here). Tapping into wireless hotspots or logging into our test router was a doddle, thanks to HP's useful connectivity software.

From a cosmetic point of view the product shows its age with a dark grey finish that includes various buttons to the side and bottom of the screen and a rather RSI inducing keypad (but was still useful during a game of COD2 on the PPC).

On a positive note the build quality of the 2490 is exceptional, the sides of the unit are covered in a rubber material and the front LCD is protected by a removable transparent plastic cover. This makes the unit ideal for those who need a rugged PDA when travelling on-site.

The software that is supplied with the HP is also impressive, you get Pocket office for editing Microsoft Office documents on the fly, the afore mentioned connectivity utilities and you a software voucher that can be used to purchase items from HP’s online store.

Battery performance was good and not only does it provide a main battery you also get a battery backup as well, to protect your data if the main battery fails. Plus you can get an optional 2880 mAh battery to increase battery life further.

The HP 2490 is a fine example of a traditional PDA. It has more than enough power and robust features to be a useful addition to your mobile needs.
