Description
Technically we have already reviewed the P3600 before as the Orange M700 that we covered a while back is the same product. However with the April ROM update that HTC released, the P3600 now poses the same specification and by the looks of it slightly better performance.
The product is available in both black and a pearl white finish - the latter is what we got to review. It does look stylish indeed and as it weighs only 150g it's extremely light for transporting around and for once is a sound alternative to a smartphone.
Dotted around the exterior of the product are a series of buttons that allow you to activate the camera option, voice recording button, a handily placed miniSD card slot to the side and a useful jogwheel that is used to navigate around the device - though you still have your styles pen of course for tapping on-screen or when using the virtual keyboard and there is a joypad at the base for playing the odd game.
The 2.8” 240 x 320 hi-res screen does the job perfectly and the games, videos and images that were displayed on-screen were vibrant. The screen also makes it easier for viewing web pages and the displaying of text.
Regarding the connectivity options the P3600 is well equipped to handle any of your needs, you have Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, push email, Bluetooth 2.0, 3G UMTS/HSPDA, 3G video calls and dual Wifi support which was easy to configure thanks to the connectivity manager.
And of course with the new firmware fix - which was already installed on our review unit - you have an 8 Channel GPS receiver, which though does not sound impressive was still able to get a Satellite lock in under a minute which was good - though these times will vary depending on your area. We think there is also a one map trial of TomTom's Navigator six that you can download to test out the functionality.
WM5 is still being used on this device, but HTC have enhanced the general look and feel to provide you with a better experience. The standard applications are all here to, including the Pocket Office Range, Adobe Acrobat LE and a zip utility.
Moving back to the hardware for a second the P3600 has two cameras, one on the front for video calls and one on the back for general photos/videos, however you can switch between the two when required.
At 2.1MP the P3600 takes some good pictures but its close up shots were not as impressive, so you need to adjust a few settings to get the best results. The camera also lacks a built- in flash so for low light condition shots you will need to adjust your white balance setting to compensate.
You get around 43mb of free memory to play with when you take into account all the software already installed, so a 1/2GB miniSD card may be worth purchasing so you can listen to music or watch videos on your device.
The sound quality through the internal speakers was actually pretty good, though on the down side the USB port on the base of the unit is used also by the hands free/headphones, but you can use a set of A2DP Bluetooth headphones if you want to expand.
Due to the units size voice calls were also easy to do and the call quality was good though our Orange Sim.
Battery life was also impressive thanks to the 1500mAH unit which was above average during our tests and surprisingly it lasted nearly 10 hours in our video test.
Performance tests also showed us that it outperformed the Orange M700 in graphical/file areas, which shows that the new firmware update seems to get the most from the Samsung 400Mhz CPU, 64 RAM and 128MB ROM.
