Description
It's rare that you come across a modern PDA with everything included straight out of the box, but with the Orange SPV M700 this could be one such example. Orange have used the HTC P3600 shell for their latest product and pimped this to include an impressive feature list, with Quad Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 3G (UMTS, HSPDA), GPS, Wifi 802.11bg, Video Calls, push email, USB host 2mp camera and Bluetooth 2.0 support.
Without sounding perverted the device feels great in the Palm of your hand, weighing around 150g and measuring 108 x 58 x 8mm. It looks the business to, with either its black or glossy white finish this could be one of the first PDA that breaks the geek mould.
Even the buttons laid out on the bottom of the device, plus the joypad are relatively easy to press/use. You even get a jogwheel for navigating around the device. The only thing missing is a slide out keypad so you are stuck with the stylus and virtual keyboard I’m afraid.
Delving into the contents of the box you get a nice protective case for protecting your investment, a spare stylus pen and a plastic cheap looking headset (it’s the only blemish). Interestingly you also have a car charger included, which is very useful for those who need to work on the fly and charge their device - but are not always office based.
Along side the GPS receiver Orange supplies you with their own SatNav software which is not as feature packed as say TomTom, but it’s nice to have something to use when you are playing with your new toy. But you will find it takes a while to pick up a GPS signal depending on where you are using the device and the software utilises your internet connection for downloading map data on the fly.
Regarding software the M700 does not disappoint either, with a selection of useful software and utilities, including the standard Pocket Office editors/viewers, zip program, Adobe acrobat LE, a Bluetooth explorer, Internet Sharing feature and their own hotlink front menu option which you can customise to launch programs easily from the front screen.
Thanks to its range of connectivity options we were able to connect up to our Wireless router, browse websites quickly or connect to Bluetooth devices easily (even to a pair of A2DP headphones). This was mainly thanks to the supplied connectivity manager which can also be used to switch your phone to flightmode and turn on options at the touch of a button.
Though not the fastest of processors, the 400mhz Samsung CPU does a good job of powering the device and the 1500mAh battery should give you above average life before you need to recharge it. But we recommend getting a miniSD card quickly as you are limited to only 34mb of free user memory.
Moving onto the camera, this has a nice range of on-screen features for taking photos/videos in a variety of conditions, there’s a nice sports mode for capturing a number of consecutive shots and adjustments can be made to suite certain light conditions. There is certainly some thought gone into the camera and is one of the best we have used on a PDA.
The 240 x 320 display is sharp and viewing images or playing games looked great. Even 3G video calls looked fine and thanks to the two camera lens, you can swap between them during a call.
