Another piece of Duracell Tech we have been using recently is the Portable Speedy Charger which is a device designed to charge a combination of AA and AAA batteries. Four of the latter ship with the device as standard though 2 are AA 1700mAh rated batteries and two are AAA 750mAh rated.
But for testing purposes our review unit had four AA 1700mAh rated batteries. Note you can get spare batteries for the charger from £7.49 per pack (price of a AA 2000mAh rated four pack)
Design
In terms of design the Speedt Charger is adorned in the corporate colours of Duracell (Black & Gold) and it has a clam like shell which opens up to reveal the battery compartment inside (this kind of reminds us of Captain Kirk’s communicator).
In order to charge the batteries you then have to attach the supplied mains plug to the back of the unit (comes with UK adaptor) before you can start to charge - which in some ways makes it a little more compact when carrying around in your bag or pocket.
Plugging the unit into the mains has also been thought out as you can rotate the bottom battery compartment away from the floor. This is ideal if you’re using the charger at say a hotel which normally has plug sockets close to the table tops (you have almost a 90 degree of angle to play with to ensure that the plug fits).
Mind you if you wanted to plug this into a four-way adapter then you would need a space between each plug as the width of the unit is a little on the larger side.
Tests
With a 1700mAh rating or up to 2000 if you buy different batteries, these are certainly solid performers.
We have not really gone to town on tests as most of our tech doesn’t utilise the batteries, but we have had them plugged into our Darth Vader Replica Lightsaber for at least a month and its still going strong, plus if you are using them for remotes you won’t have to worry about recharging these for a while!
However the device can roughly charge up 4 batteries with 85% charge in only 2 hours. This is even quicker with only two batteries so if you want power and fast recharging these will do the job nicely.
