Description
The Night Watch game is based around the plot lines of the books and film, though it explores a few of the avenues not covered in the movie adaptation, so it can appeal to those who have never seen the film.

Night Watch the game is a cross between an RPG and an Adventure game and would have succeeded if not for the bland storyline, poor voice-overs and basic graphics that make up the cut-scenes throughout the game.

The biggest problem we found is that the game never really knows what direction it is heading, from the start your character Stas is contemplating if he should shoot this women in a nearby apartment, but then his phone rings and then these bad guys appear who turn out to be Dark Others, who have the ability to transform into werewolves and are also a collection of vampires and, sorcerers. Then a women appears and kicks their ass, now she is from the Lightothers side and is the main competitor to the Darkside. Confused? You will be.

One minute you are a guy on the roof and then the next you are part of the Lightothers and are introduced to an alternative reality called the Gloom, which is a place where humans can't see you, but you can see them - our heads are spinning.

Next you are offered to choose your path, either become a Shapeshifter, Mage or Sorcerer and each character has pros and cons, i.e better at magic or better at strength. We decided to opt for the Shapeshifter, as we imagined we would turn into a heart stopping beast……only to find out we had turned into a dog and our greatest power was to lick our own…(we get the idea (ed).

As mentioned earlier the plot is all over the place, it takes about 7 hours worth of game-play to understand what you main objectives are, there is never a sense that you are in an adventure because you always seem to be fighting hordes of bad guys, which appear on the strange backdrops which are almost describable as zones, you never see the whole landscape, just cut-off sections of a map.

Your first taste of combat arrives when you enter the sub-way tunnels and confront a horde of vamps, at this point you are joined by another Lightother - where the hell did she come from! - and when combat surfaces you each take it in turns to do damage, the turned based combat at first is quite enjoyable and successful combat results in gaining levels-ups which you can use to enhance your character.

You can only fight outside the Gloom in the beginning which puts you at a disadvantage, but as the game progresses you can move in and out of these strange dimensions, which is depicted by a white glow.

Because combat becomes so frequent you soon get bored of the turn-based system and crave for some adventure or brain taxing problems to get your teeth into. Sadly you are left with little in the way of either and Night Watch will be left in the dark for a long time (the dark of your cupboard that is).

Graphically the games graphics are poor, almost to the point where you think you have been transported back in time to the late 90's. The animations for the combat are good, but soon get repetitive, the voice-overs are cringe worthy and the storyline is a bundle of wet lettuce.

Nightwatch Its not all bad though, you will find some enjoyment - if you can last that long - as the later levels offer more in the way of useful spells and magical items which can enhance combat and gives the game a glimmer of hope.

The turn-based combat will not please everybody and can be frustrating when you want to explore your surroundings only to find every step offers you the same old enemies to kill and the lack of landscape cancels out explorations. For fans of the series you will gain some enjoyment out of the game, but for others you will be left confused and frustrated.
