The trucks also serve additional purposes, for example a command Truck is your mobile Headquarters, which as the name suggests can be moved in times of need. The command truck allows you to build Infantry sections and Lieutenants; the latter is another new aspect of the game, as the Lieutenants can be used to order troops. When your troops are commanded they fight better and do not get pinned as easily.
The Field Support truck allows you to supply Sappers, which are engineers, again these have had their abilities slightly adjusted from the original game, you can still use them to build structures, but they can't place down gun tents and barbed wire, but they can build 40mm stationary cannons and 25-pounder Howitzer guns which are well cool. Captains can also be created via the field truck, these have the same abilities as the Lieutenants but you can also call in artillery strikes from any position on the map.
Finally the Armor command truck allows you to deploy the Cromwell tank, Cromwell command tank and Sherman Firefly.
As with the original game, each unit or vehicle can be upgraded either by gaining veteran status or when a certain troop is created. The veteran status allows your troops or vehicles to gain additional accuracy when firing or better defensive abilities, you get veteran status by staying alive basically.
Tanks now have new abilities to, one of which allows you to 'dig in’, when this option is activated your tank will be surrounded by sandbags, which gives you additional protection.
Also we forget to mention that you now can build 3" motor gun placements as well as Vickers machine gun placements, but you will find your infantry has more responsibility for building these types of defences.
You can now build Slit Trenches for additional cover, these trenches offer greater protection from gun fire, but are vulnerable to grenades and incendiary grenades - the latter we will come back to latter.
Once again your troops can camp inside a building and use the cover to take out passing troops.
Also during the game you can use special bonus abilities, these range from being able to call in tank re-enforcements, commandos or strafe the area with plane gun fire. These will re-charge after a while, but do offer another form of tactics.
Unlike other RTS games the balance between the two sides is always kept even to a certain degree, as there are population caps which are normally set up to a maximum of 100. This means you cannot build hugh armies of say like a hundred tanks, which opens up a more balanced multiplayer experience, as you have to plan which vehicles and troops you will need due to your population cap being relatively low.
The above system works well and makes for a much more enjoyable game in our eyes.
Some of the battles, especially the ones when you have to defend your base are crazy! When you have Tiger tanks streaming down the hills, with tons of troops, artillery fire going off, you do get a sense of how frightening it must have been for those in the real battles. When you do hold off an advance of enemy units for over 20minutes, you do get great sense of achievement.
