Description
The Asus M530W has started to make its way to the UK shores now and essentially the device is marketed as a business smartphone, but with some nice consumer additions thrown in to make us sit up and notice.
The 530w measures 117 x 65 x 13.8 mm (H x W x D) and weighs 135g, but its still a touch bulky compared to other smartphones such as the Samsung i-600.
Its back is also a bit slippery, so when holding the device both hands are required in order to text properly.
We can't mention what you get inside the box because our review unit came with just the phone, but dotted alongside the devices exterior you get a jog wheel to the left hand side, which can be used as a means of navigating around the WM6 interface and below this you will find volume controls for adjusting your phones speaker and to the right there is a shortcut button to access the useful 2MP camera, which we will come to later.
Alongside the quality 2.4” hi-res screen (320 x 240 res) there is a Qwerty keyboard which allows you to quickly type in text messages and emails, the keys were generally comfortable to use but the predictive text option can get annoying, its best to ignore its recommendations and simply type through until you have finished your word or sentence.
Its WM6 operating system contained the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Windows Mobile Media Player 10, but you get only a viewer for reading Microsoft office documents, which limits its use as a proper business platform - unless you get hold of some 3rd party software that is.
General performance was good thanks to the Intel 416mhz CPU, but we did have to perform a hard reset on one occasion as it hanged whilst entering the email setup wizard.
Videos played back fine and music sounded pretty meaty from the back speaker, so its consumer use is also taken care of.
With regards to connectivity options you have Tri-Band GSM 900/1800/1900, 3G UMTS (but no HSDPA), Bluetooth 2.0/A2DP and dual Wifi support, which will be handy for linking up to Wifi hotspots or company routers.
You do get an impressive146Mb of free memory to play with after the applications have been taken into account, but if you want to add an additional microSD expansion card you will have to take off the back cover.
During our tests the Phone calls were clear, with both parties hearing each other no probs and there is even a front mounted camera for 3G video calls.
On the subject of cameras the 2MP camera with its built-in flash was one of the best we have seen on a business Smartphone, especially as it features an auto focus macro mode for close up shots.
This mode is beneficial when using the supplied business card reader software. In a nutshell you can use the camera to take pictures of business cards and then after the image has been taken the software tries to recognise the text back, which you can then add to your contacts if you so wish.
The success of the recognition tended to be a hit and miss affair but if you have the patience it could be a useful business edition.
The battery life from the 1200mAh unit is claimed at 4-5 hours of talk time (GSM) and 200 hours of standby time, but we found during our tests that making calls or using 3G seemed to heavily reduce this figure.
