WM6 - Windows Mobile 6
Description
We managed to get hold of the final prototype of the HP IPAQ 514 before it hit the shops - which is the finished unit bar a few ROM tweaks (it’s listed finally on HP's website). Apart from being HP’s first smartphone the price will certainly interest those who are looking for a Windows Mobile 6 device without breaking the bank.
At around £182 HP's first smartphone is going to get a lot of attention, but to keep costs down a few adjustments had to be made to the inside and out.
The phone does look very business like in its dark grey housing and this is HP's marketing strategy, for those looking for a phone to show off to your mates then you are in the wrong place.
What you do get is a light 102g smartphone that feels comfortable in the Palm of your hand. On the left side of the device you have a microSD card socket, buttons for volume control, plus a small 2.5" headphone socket and a recording button to the right - but that’s about it.
To the base of the unit you have a USB/Mains connector for charging your unit both from the mains and via your computer.
The screen houses a small 2" 176 x 220 display which does look ok thanks to HP's clever use of a dark home-screen background - which masks the lower quality to good effect.
The smaller screen does make it more of a challenge when viewing documents and full websites but its something you get used to.
Underneath the screen you will find a small keypad that is comfortable to use, but was not as responsive as we would have liked during texting.
The provided 1.3mp camera once again fits into HP's mentality that business users don’t need flashy cameras and this shows with its limited functionality. It does take images at 1280 x 1024 and for most purposes they looked fine when we viewed them on our computer, but don’t expect anything fancy and you won’t be disappointed.
Now we move onto some of the biggest reasons for wanting the HP 514, the first lies with the inclusion of the rare Windows Mobile 6 operating system, which has the same look and feel of Windows Vista (PC). Amongst the cosmetic changes lies some updated components and a handy Windows mobile update piece of software that works in the same way as the PC version.
You also get updated office document viewers and the latest version of Internet Explorer, Windows Live and a new Windows Media player.
From a connectivity point of view HP have managed to throw in 802.11g Wi-Fi support which is another reason to consider the HP. Connecting up to our Wi-Fi router was a piece of cake thanks to the supplied connection manger and we were web browsing in seconds.
Yes you don’t get 3G support but more expensive devices don't include this either so you will have to make do with Quad Band/GSM/GPRS/Edge as an alternative.
For music lovers you will be pleased to know that the HP worked fine with a pair of Bluetooth headphones with A2DP support.
There is about 52MB of free memory to play with before you start to add content, which is better than the majority of devices available, but a microSD card would be a recommended purchase.
General Windows performance was fine thanks to the OMAP 200Mhz CPU and it has a reasonable battery life via the Lithium-Ion 1100mAh battery which has 6.5 hours of talk time and 188 days standby but this will be reduced when watching videos or accessing websites via Wi-Fi connectivity.
Using our Orange Sim we found the phone reception to be ok - for our test area that is - and call quality both inside and outside were really clear, there was no visible background noise to be heard.
