The i-mate JAMA 201 is another example of a business smartphone, but it's certainly not going to win any awards for its range of connectivity options. Though it could be useful as an email solution due to its light weight and Qwerty keyboard.

Design
With the i-mate lacking in core features we have to look at some of its positives and the first lies with its ultra light weight profile and full Qwerty keyboard- held beneath its 2.5” screen.
The spec claims the device weighs 152g, but it feels a lot lighter than this and with a rubberised coating around the edges it is easy to hold for typing or making calls.
The keys themselves are small and on first use you will feel they are a touch hard to press, but after a while we could use the keyboard effectively when typing in emails or text messages.
However the joypad above the keypad was awkward to use, but at least you get a handy switch to the side (which functions like a jogwheel) which allowed quick access around the interface.
Software/Performance
From a software point of view there is little in the way of exciting additions, i-mate need to look at HTC or E-Ten for what a customised interface should be like.
There are a few dedicated i-mate utilities, but mostly you get the bog standard software that you find on Windows Mobile 6, but because it's only the standard edition you won't find editable versions of Office Mobile (only the viewers), which wastes the opportunity to utilise the keyboard to good effect.
Performance wise playing back videos on the 2.5" screen was a bit hit and miss, the videos were a bit dark and juddery in places, so we don't feel that the Samsung CPU is up for much multimedia functionality, which to be fair is not needed as much on a business platform.
Its 2Mp camera was poor, with long shot times and grainy images, which was made worse by the lack of flash.
Memory is also limited to around 30mb of free storage, so you will need an expansion card from the off.
Connectivity/Battery
From a connectivity point of view we have to say the JAMA 201 is way below modern standards, there is no Wi-Fi, 3G or Quad-band support, so its EGPRS will be the only method of gaining access to your emails on the fly.
Battery life is actually good, but this is primarily to do with the fact that it has little in the way of features to hinder its operation.
