Description
With the launch of the N96 a month or so off, we thought it would be cool to have a go at this video lark and upload a video preview of the Nokia N96. Essentially the video preview looks at the features, design and battery life of the device - bearing in mind the product we had was a final prototype.

As well as the video preview we also have the specs below and a selection of images, including a shot taken with the 5MP camera (edited to 800 x 600 to reduce data size and to fit into gallery).

If you have any questions about the N96 please use the comments system below and we will try and answer your requests.

Early thoughts

Due to video time constraints, we did not get chance to mention the build quality issue we discovered on the N96, One of the buttons on the right side was coming away slightly from the casing, so we hope this is not a final reflection of the lasting build quality.

The question we would ask is, will the N96 be a good enough upgrade to the N958GB? At this stage we have to say not quite. As the DVB-H service is not available in the UK till 2009/2010, by the time this comes out the next model will be released, so the only real advantage is the 16GB of storage and the various design tweaks.

The Battery life is not great either, so we will have to save final judgement till October and by this time we hope all our concerns are sorted.

Music Software & Rough Idea of the Sound Quality*

*As we thought the sound from our test track is distorted slightly by the compression, when we uploaded our video to YouTube.

The actual sound quality for music playback is a lot better of course and it does have a lot of power from those dinky stereo speakers.

good review
written by luqy, August 23, 2008
ive been pretty much scowering the internet, to find a decent video previe, of this phone, and finally, i think your video, gives the best sense of ewhat the phone will actually look like, and feel in you hands, however, i am a little dissapointed, that you idnt mention much about the music player, and sound quality, in your video, if you could write a paragraph or show a video of the sound quality, this could really help me get a prospective on wheather to buy the phone. but anyway thanks as your review, was really down to earth and simple and cleared up quite a few things i was wondering a bout. smilies/cool.gif
Cheers

Hi, we did have a longer video of the N96 until we forgot about the 10 minute restriction on YouTube, so we had to chop 8 minutes of footage.

Essentially the music player is the same as the N95GB, however we will try and do a mini video for you when we get 5 minutes.

Its difficult to mimic the sound quality in a podcast/video because the quality gets downgraded by YouTube or compressed in mp3 format. However we will try our best. Actual speakers are really loud mind, for most of our tests we had to run on half volume.

We have just put together two more videos of the N96. The first explains a bit about the TV-Tuner, extra design issues we found during testing, the battery cover, battery, the pen function, camera and video recorder.

These will be live later today.

yeah more videos
No worries
written by Crowdedbrain, August 31, 2008
"why are they no more vids updated in the past few days" - We have done 4 videos already but it seems the public want more so we will try and deliver smilies/grin.gif. The accelerometer does not work on the prototype which is why the subject has not been covered - honest ;-). As mentioned in other videos the gallery and most of the software is bog standard Nokia stuff, so you would not gain much insight.

Hmmm could do a few vids on the gaming side of things, I'll try and load up a few more games to the device - let you know how the d-pad feels during play etc. Also will try and wip up a bit about the multimedia keys.
where?

Nearly there
written by Crowdedbrain, September 05, 2008
One more video will be posted showcasing our thoughts about the gaming side of things, plus final confirmation about the CPU and 3D accelerator chip.

The reason for the delay is that we have been snowed under with other videos and projects lately, which had to come first in all honesty, but we shall aim to get the video live over the weekend.

Video is live
written by Crowdedbrain, September 06, 2008
Well as promised we have added a video about the gaming side and controls. Plus included in the video is confirmation about the 3D Chip and CPU.

This is the last video now as the full release will be coming out soon.

We hope you enjoyed all the videos and that you got some use from them. Stay tuned for our iPhone 3G review in the next day or so.
For those who doubt
written by Crowdedbrain, September 07, 2008
We got the confirmation about the 3D chip from our PR contact who themselves got the info from the tech guys at Nokia themselves.

Plus the Nokia Forum also lists the 3D chip if you want further concrete proof....

WTF
written by Crowdedbrain, September 08, 2008
We just checked the link that we posted above, yesterday it was showing the 3D chip listed under the CPU. Now it has been removed, so we are going to have to go back to Nokia and find out what is going on.

Still no reply from Nokia on this, so it could be a U-turn has been made on the N96 3D chip. However with the device just around the corner we do not have that long to wait to find out for ourselves.
