Only six months ago we reviewed the first N95 and we thought this was a pretty impressive smartphone, only really flawed by its poor GPS performance and battery life. Now Nokia have listened to the rants of the earlier reviews and have re-launched the product which improves on the original in nearly every area!
Dimensions
The product is still light in weight, weighing only 128g and it measures 99 (H) x 53 (W) x 21(D) mm.
Its screen has now been increased from 2.6" to 2.8" and the brightness has been improved so watching videos is even better.
Box Content
Inside the box you get a user manual, headphones, Install CD with Nokia PC Suite, TV-out cable, USB cable and a mains charger.
Features
The N95 is feature packed to the hilt, you have a GPS receiver built-in with its A-GPS (assisted GPS) function, which is designed to speed up the location acquisition time by using your data connection to pre-fetch satellite info, then you have Quad-Band GSM, 3G with HSDPA support (3.6mbps), an 8GB hard drive, 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics (built-in flash), stereo speakers and a TV-out.
Design
The new N95 looks much better than the original -depending on your colour taste that is - even though it is virtually the same size and shape its black finish gives it a more professional look, which should appeal to members of both sexes.
The screen slides up effortlessly to reveal the keypad underneath and the keys themselves are comfortable to use when texting or typing in destinations (via Google Maps).
When the screen is pushed down this reveals the controls for your Music software - as per the original - and again these were handy to use when controlling our music.
To the sides you will find volume controls, shortcut buttons to your gallery and camera, plus your TV-out port and stereo speakers.
At the base you have your power socket and a USB port for connection up to your computer
Screen Quality
As mentioned the new 2.8" (240 x 320 pixels) screen is a lot brighter than before (though it is not touch-screen), possibly only noticeable when watching videos as we had no problems viewing Spiderman 3.
Yep our review product came with the movie installed on the hard drive and it looked great, however more impressively was the TV-out option, which when plugged into our 28" CRT TV scaled full screen and apart from the volume being a touch low, the quality was great - considering the film was compressed on the device.
For navigation purposes - due to the screen lacking an anti-glare coating - it did pick up the odd reflection, though not that noticeable during our tests and in the winter months - due to the low light conditions.
Sound Quality
The stereo speakers sounded great and the volume on the device itself was pretty loud. You should have no problems listening to music or watching videos with the Nokia and you always have the headphones to fall back onto as well, which were comfortable to use.
