Description
Genius recently sent us their USB DVB-T TV Tuner, which is designed for both Laptops and Desktop PC's.
Bundled with the box you get the USB tuner, an adaptor that connects the device to the digital aerial, a small remote control, mini USB ext cable and TvGo MCE player software.
Installation was a doddle, but unlike the Freecom TV tuner we reviewed a few months back the aerial does not have a suction cup available, so you are limited to mounting the device on a desk or on top of your PC and not your window.
The magnet used by the aerial is pretty strong so keep this away from your credit cards.
During the setup of the TV-Channels we found we had to do two auto-scans to get all the channels we wanted, this is down to the position of the aerial, however you can save each saved auto scan and reload them, so in case one of your scans doesn’t pick up the channel you want, you can always fall back on your saves.
There were lots of Freeview TV channels and Radio stations to pick from, you had ITV2, ITV2 +1, E4, E4+1, TMF, Hits, Sky sports news, to name but a few.
Using the small remote control was fairly comfortable to use, but being infra red you have to be in line of sight of the receiver in order to change the TV program.
Most channels would change pretty quickly, whilst otherwise would struggle when the signal was week. However on the whole the small aerial did a good job of maintaining a strong signal.
The software supplied with the Tuner was actually quite good, though you can use the Genius with WinXP Media Center Edition as well if needs be (not sure about Vista).
For a start you have a Time shift function which allows you to record the TV station to your hard disk - in real time - and then rewind or forward the program to suite your needs.
You can record and schedule recordings of your programs to your hard drive and the software also supports EPG - Electronic Program Guide. But best all you can Record TV programs in PC or NB standby mode and sleep mode.
There's a nice screen capture mode which produced some decent quality images and whilst we are on the subject of quality, the picture from each TV channel on our 1280 x 1024 display was not bad, but some channels look better than others in full screen mode (the Tuner does support HDTV quality screens).
Thankfully you can set the TV window to be kept on top, which allows you to work in Microsoft Word for example, whilst the picture can be positioned in view at the top or bottom of the page.
There also seems to be Bilingual and Teletext support (channel dependant) where available and you can activate a preview mode so you can see several channels in thumbnail form on the same screen at once.
